Gamer Wear: Another day, another Dalek

Today, in honor of the awesome christmas present I got myself... Daleks!

First, a freakin awesome crossover shirt from tshirtbordello...

No one told Mario that was a bad place to stand?
No amount of radishes are gonna stop a Dalek, Mario. You better hope you got some star power in them overalls!

Next up, in honor of the holiday that just passed... (I'm behind the times, so what!) Is a clever shirt from redbubble

When you see the weeping angel, you'll shit bricks!
This one is pretty simple in design, but it's the details that matter. The guys that produce this shirt also have a couple other Dr. Who themed shirts

L33t BAO strats!

1. Don't eat them straight from the truck as the insides are often hot as fuck
2. Make sure it contains pork and not "pork"
3. Enjoy your Bao! It is delicious!
So fluffy, like a necron/blood angel high five!
Nah, just kidding. (Not about bao being delicious. I fuckin love me some bao) I'm really gonna talk about the leet strats I am concocting for this coming years Bay Area Open!  The guys that run the BAO have been up to a lot since the last one. Made a new website, opened a new online store, and started a podcast! Those guys are goin off!

There are a couple changes to the format for the upcoming event. Firstly, the tourney is set at 1750. 1750 is a weird spot for a lot of armies.  As far as I understand, a full game of 40k is designed to be played at 2k and "balanced" (I'm giving 40k developers the benefit of the doubt here) around those point values.  This means that the developers expect armies to have a certain amount of threats and a certain amount of answers to threats. This is the fabled "All-comers" list. When you duck under the designed for point value, armies start to become lopsided. So, at 1750 (and anything below the optimal point value) you must make trade offs in the force you take to either make it resemble a balanced list, or sacrifice a balance to emphasize the armies strong points.

Bay Area Open 2012

First off, Happy Holidays readers!!

I hope Santa brought you all that you asked for and made your dreams come true!

One of my gifts was the green light to return to one of the premier war gaming events on the West Coast, The Bay Area Open !!!

Fellow writer Dok and I will be headed up to take part in all the events and shenanigans the first weekend of March.

What events? So glad you asked!!!

On Friday we will be in the Teams 40k event. We have been brewing up some ideas on how to make our opponents squirm and flee in terror!!! We have a moderate amount of practice in teams events from Staff group games and drunken 4 ways in my garage (Yes, it's as bad as it sounds!) I am looking forward to this event a lot, as it is scored on performance as well as fluff and awesomeness, something that Dok and I both excel at.

Saturday and Sunday will be days of the main event. I will be looking to redeem myself for last years crappy showing. 2-3-2 for the day is unacceptable!!! VENGEANCE WILL BE MINE!

What is very interesting this year is the new Bay Area Open Scenerio,

Bay Area Open Scenario: The Bay Area Open scenario is all three book missions, played simultaneously. There are 2 Capture and Control Objectives on 40mm bases, 3 Seize Ground objectives on 25mm bases, and kill points as victory conditions. Whichever player achieves more victory conditions, wins. In the case of an equal number of victory conditions between players, the game is a tie. Follow all rules for placing objectives as outlined in the book. Seize ground objectives are placed first, before rolling for first turn and deployment as normal. Capture and control objectives must be the standard distance from one another and at least 12″ from a Seize Ground objective. After each game, Victory Conditions will be tallied, and the total amount earned in all games will be used for tie breakers.
I am confident that my Orks can do well with this particular mission. Knowing that there will always be 5 objectives is a key to my list building for this particular event and also limiting the number of KPs I give up will help tremendously.

Last years event was awesome. It's a well organized event with a great crew, great tables and a great attitude. I recommend this event to everyone!! Hope to see you all there!

The top 10 articles of 2011

This has been an interesting year for me. Started a blog, stopped a blog... Restarted a blog. (Sometimes you gotta quit things to go play flash games for a couple months. You know how it is.)

Played in a band for a while, got a motorcycle, dated a girl for almost a whole year!   (This is apparently describing my 30 year old mid-life crisis)

Anyway, enough about me, on to the top 10 from our inaugural year at 3forint!

10. - Magister took a look at the codex: Space Marines biker variant. It's a good starter point to familiarize yourself with the army, that's fo sho

9. - A quick recap of one of my first games with GK vs a blood angels army. My opponent was hung over, and I served him a heaping morning portion of ass whooping!

8. - I believe this post has something to do with whale hunting, but my girlfriend won't let me look at it, so I'm not sure...

7. - Soldado did a whole series of these and reviewed the units as he saw fit. This series caused a bit of fuss on dakka as people didn't quite agree with his opinions... I know, people disagreeing on the internet? That shit is crazy!

6. - Magister gave a pre-release review of the... last? Magic set to come out. (I'm really not sure if it was the last or not to be honest). Unfortunately he only did white, as he became really busy at his new job at the weiner factory.

Catch the top 5 after the jump!

450 points is apparently not my sweet spot

Or, how to take a silly list and lose to not reading the mission!

Last night at my flgs they had another micro tournament. This time at, you guessed it, 450 points! The format was a bit different as min FoC was not enforced. The allowances were 0-1 hq, 1+ troops, and 0-1 for fast, elite, and heavy.

I considered bringing Eldar again as that went pretty well last time. But I just bought a stormraven and have it mostly assembled so I wanted to try it out. My silly list looked like this:

Death company x 5 with power weapon
Death company dread with blood talons, and heavy flamer
Stormraven with multi-melta, and assault cannon

What the fuck is a scoring unit?

0 scoring units, 1 unit I can actually control, and only one way to get them there. Sure fire route to winning big or losing hardcore!

Skyrim patch 1.3.10!

Apparently, there is a new Skyrim patch available today.  Bethesda is not fast and furious with these patches.  I have been having an increasing amount of freezing and crashing of my PS3 of late so I have given Skyrim a bit of a break. (and because my girlfriend was around all weekend. Damn you, girlfrend!!!)

Here's the breakdown of what they are fixing:

Update 1.3.10 Notes (PC)
  • Support for 4-Gigabyte Tuning (Large Address Aware)
  • Fixed issue with accented characters not displaying properly at the end of a line
Update 1.3 Notes (all platforms unless specified)
  • General stability improvements
  • Optimize performance for Core 2 Duo CPUs (PC)
  • Fixed Radiant Story incorrectly filling certain roles
  • Fixed magic resistances not calculating properly
  • Fixed issue with placing books on bookshelves inside player purchased homes
  • Fixed dragon animation issues with saving and loading
  • Fixed Y-look input to scale correctly with framerate

The upgrade to the PC versions is pretty helpful. Most people I know were already running a mod to let them use 4GB and they said the game ran great like that. The other improvements are a bit underwhelming.  I guess the magic resistance thing was a big deal for some people, but I never ran into the problem.  I did run into the bookshelf problem, but I kept on living my life without putting books on a shelf in a pretend world.

Working in QA as I do, I'm sure tracking down the crashing bugs is a huge pain in the ass. But I'm also sure they have a ton of under-paid, over-caffeinated dudes at their shop who are spending most if not all of their time tracking this shit down.

Or they are working on localization.

Because it's not only important to ship your buggy ass game "on time", it's also important to ship it overseas so that people in foreign countries can complain about their shit not working as well. Good times!

Avengers trailer! Dark Knight rises trailer!

A group of movie trailers has to be referred to as a park, right? Does that mean these trailers are filled with white trash and meth labs? I'll let you be the judge...

Wah wah... (pronounced waaaaaa waaaaaa)

There's a lot of talk out there about Grey Knights being overpowered. I'm not really sure why it took several months for this opinion to explode out on the internet, but it's definitely the trending topic of the last couple weeks.  #greyknightsareop!!!

Still relevant

From people patiently pointing out the weaknesses and strengths:

To people rambling that everything in the codex will kill everything you could ever field so you should prolly just commit warhammer seppuku:

Colorado Part 1: A brewery on every corner...

For the week of Thanksgiving, my girlfriend and I, as well as my buddy and his wife went to Colorado to hang out with some family and drink a lot of beers. And when I say a lot...

Beer! It's what's for every meal!

A quick aside before I get into the beer and potatoes of this article, if you ever think that you should drive to CO because it's only 17 hours... just fly! I've done the drive twice both ways and it's not all that fun. Especially when you forget any sort of music and you have to listen to the same weezer cd for 8 hours straight before chucking it out the window in favor of road noise and static. Let me tell you, it was not a perfect situation.  We had to make believe that we were all on drugs of the drive was gonna freak me out. (Pardon me, but music puns are my favorite)

On to the beers!

Dramatic failures in the guise of warhammer

This weekend I busted back onto the scene of warhammer! With the same old tired GK list :(

I figured since I knew that list like the back of both my hands, that I would be a shoo-in! Unfortunately my rustiness combined with a shift in the metagame and a couple tables with sparse terrain sealed my doom!  Doom!!! DOOOOOOMM!!! tl:dr I didn't win spectacularly.

Slightly less epic than this

I did get to shake off some rust and play against some challenging lists, so that's a good experience. Especially since I plan on heading up to Antioch for the second Bay Area Open in a couple months. Without further ado, I'll run a recap of my games after the jump and my major mistakes in each of them.

400 is the new black

Last night at my local game store, they decided to replace the normal Tuesday night 40k scrimmage with a 400 point full scale tournament! It required the normal force org stuff and had a restriction of no vehicles with a facing of av 13 or more. All the games were on a modified 4' x 3' table so we could fit two games to a table. I heard about it over on Dakka and decided that it was an interesting enough idea to break me out of my 40k slump. So I brainstormed and brainstormed and consulted my homies and this is what I came up with:

The tiniest banner for the tiniest army

Eldar 400 point list

HQ - Farseer w/singing spear, doom, Runes of warding

Troops 1 - Guardian jetbikes x 3 w/shuriken cannon
Troops 2 - Dire Avengers w/Exarch, dual catapults, bladestorm
Dedicated transport  - Wave serpent w/twin linked scatter lasers, shuriken cannon

I ran 9 points short on 400 but I couldn't figure out any way to switch it around that I liked, so I ran with it.  My plan was to have a large number of shots that I could take outside of mos things charge range.  The runes of warding was for the large number of people at my store that play GK (None of which I got to play, haha).  Game recaps after the jump!

Life, it's bigger...

It's bigger than you and you are not me!

But that was just a dream, just a dream... For reals! Or was it???

Obligatory 90's song reference, go! A lot of us took some time off of the blog to do various RL things. What are RL things you say, person who's still  paying attention to a super inactive blog? Well personally, A trip to colorado to sample the crazy amount of breweries there (More on that later). Hanging with my lady, occupying skyrim...

And basically doing anything I can to avoid things that seemed to be work like.  Also, falling into the trap of flash "strategy games" (ala Travian) that I told myself I wouldn't do again. Those games are such a drain on my sanity and take so much time out of my life it's ridiculous.

I am going to (hopefully not) single handedly attempt to drag this blog kicking and screaming out of the uterus of anonymity and into the bright, judgmental sunlight of internet famousity!!!

Upcoming posts include...
Beer!!! My opinions on which ones are awesome and which are not awesome. As well as the inception of my own brand of brews!

Games! If I can drag any of my friends out into the relative daylight of a gaming store, we will be posting some battle reports and some opinions on what's going on in games today. I heard there were some skeleton robots that needed some more talkin about

Beers! Seriously, beers are awesome.

More games! Funny stuff that happened in skyrim... to be honest, nothing's really going on besides skyrim. I did see a horse riding a horse last night though...

Well, what else did you expect? Beers and games are pretty much what I'm all about. Maybe I'lll throw in some posts about my attempt to get back in shape, if they are anything resembling successful :)

That's all for today, hopefully someone out there is still looking at this thing so they can tell all their friends. You have friends, right??? Tell them!!!

A quick shout out to the Doctor

I recently started watching Dr. Who because it was on Netflix and I was bored.  Either whiling away the hours painting or waiting for my darling girlfriend (Hi Jenni!) to come over.  I had heard of the show before on various nerd elated blogs and podcasts (woo Nerdist! Big C is dreamy!), but I didn't know anyone IRL who had seen it.
10 minutes after starting the episode 'Rose', I was hooked.  The 9th doctor had an amazing on screen energy and he meshed with Rose better than most people mesh IRL.  I could believe these two had been fated to meet up.  Every adventure they had seemed truly joyous.  From there I would spend the next couple weeks feverishly watching as many episodes a night as I feasibly could. And the next day, all I could think of was "what places am I going to get to see next???"

I bring this up because I just read this article over at Cracked.

It fully explains what I was not able to explain to my friends.  "I like dr. who... it's like... good and stuff?".  It really is an amazing show and some of the storylines reach right into the heart of me and then smash it into an iron maiden.
Not this one...
When the 9th Dr bit it and the tenth Dr. began his regeneration, I was calling bullshit.  The 9th Dr was the shit.  That's all I can really say about him.  He put his neck out time and time again for Rose and humanity and all he got was one season.

But then there was Tennant,,,

I've never been one to have "heroes". Some people look up to Michael Jordan.  Yeah, he's good at basketball, but he doesn't really inspire me to go out and slam dunk on Larry Bird.  This man though.... The tenth Doctor... Is as inspiring and deep as any real person that ever lived.   Maybe David Tennant is just the best actor to have ever lived, but every episode had me enthralled.  Perhaps he is a sorcerer.  Ensorcelling my mind with his awesomeness!

All I'm saying is if you like truly amazing sci-fi tv and have netflix then you would do well to watch the Doctor adventure through time and space. Which will be your Doctor? Who will be your favorite companion? Only time will tell!

Innistrad Limited Review: White

Though I have been out of the game for some time now, my first love of competitive gaming was Magic: The Gathering. So, just in time for the Innistrad pre-release this weekend, I am debuting the first part of a review of the set for Limited tournament play. Specifically, geared towards draft, but it should have relevance in sealed as well.

All my information is being taken from, so check out there site for even more great articles and to see the full spoiler for yourself.

SO, lets get started...

Improve your game in 3 easy steps!

Good day!

No matter what game you are playing, there are certain concepts that are common in all of them.  It's the same in chess, stratego, 40k, or real life. Some ideas are just universal in tactical situations.  These ideas build on each other like the legos of life! Here are some of the key things I consider when trying to get better at any game. (Using Warhammer 40k examples)

The only tactics I care about...

Whale Tail Wednesday - Man in Kayak vs. Whale

The ocean is a scary place, especially for Kayakers who don't know any better. Case in point:

Talking about awesome, I give this to the whale but give the man a half point for surviving this whale belly flop.

The truth as it applies to me. Being Awesome

For those of you who don't know me in the real life. I am awesome. With that said it should be obvious that you are not as awesome as me and should really look up to me more.  I am good at lots of games; Warhammer 40,000, Magic: The Gathering, World of Warcraft, King's cup, Canasta, Barrel of monkeys, and various board games. I like to think that other people who play me just don't know how awesome I am and that's why they waste their time sitting across the table from me. They Read, plan, plot, and listen to podcasts whose sole intent is to beat me at Pinochle!
Internet fist bump for being awesome!

Well, the demand of being so awesome can be pretty overwhelming. I know it's a hard life being me but I do not want or expect any sympathy. I knew what I was getting myself into when I was developing into awesomeness, the chrysalis of my old nerd self blooming into the full blown awesomoth that I am. I can attribute it to being some sort of moth/human hybrid.  Did my mom bone a caterpillar before I was born? FUCK NO!!! Really, she might have. I'm not sure! Fortunately, I don't let being a genetic freak hold me down! I think that is what being awesome is all about.

Since I'm a young man I notoriously burn the awesome candle at both ends. Playing guitar, riding a motorcycle, watching loads of Doctor who on netflix, the possibilities are endless for me! The difference between awesome and not awesome is simple. No one depends on me for anything. The awesome factor that has changed in my life is lack of responsibility. I now have a full plate of hobbies and a awesome girlfriend on top of being a super extreme high level gamer.  All the effort and responsibility that involves is just a lot of bears. Sometimes juggling bears can be difficult when they are angry. So what am I getting at?

Given my lack of worthy gaming opponents, bear attacks from all angles, and not enough time to fight said bears, the simplest solution is to go to bear fighting school for a while. The truth is, that is exactly what I am going to do.  From now on, I am dedicating my life to bear fighting! I am inclined to challenge myself to accomplish great things, one day I could even be a bear fighter trainer! Being awesome, in my opinion is learning how to do ridiculous things at a barely competent level and then pretending that you are an expert!  Obstacles can be overcome by simply going around them or ignoring them until they fall over!

I also want to take this opportunity to thank Soldado for reminding me that I am awesome and providing me with an entertaining idea for an article.  He is a good friend and I hope things work out for him!

Weekend Nosh: September 9

Short Week, so I hope everyone enjoyed it. Here is some stuff to do this weekend:

Food: Sharky's Woodfired Mexican Grill - First Caveat: This isn't "real" Mexican food. I am far from an authority on that, though I have had my share of legit tacos and tortas. This is NuMex casual dining, in the vein of Baja Fresh. However, I find their food to be much better and with a better selection. Personal favorites include the Stacked Chicken Enchiladas, the Nachos Grande (which are some of the best Nachos I have ever had) and their Pizza. The Pizza there isn't traditional pizza, it is served on toasted flat bread and has no sauce, just salsa. It's different, but really good.

Drink: Red Tail Ale - An impulse buy, it turned out to be a very solid beer. Very balanced, and with a high ABV it is a great sipping beer; great for drinking with dinner.

Movie: Letters from Iwo Jima - This war movie is a bit polarizing. It is set during the build up to the Battle of Iwo Jima, in the latter stages of World War II. This movie was a companion piece of sort, to Director Clint Eastwood's prior WWII movie "Flags of our Fathers". Letters is told from the point of view of the Japanese garrison, and does a very good job of humanizing the Japanese soldiers, who were essentially forced into a suicide defense of the island with no support. It has an excellent cast of Japanese actors and a great storyline that gives it a place second only to Saving Private Ryan in the genre. While many still are very critical (rightfully so) of the Empire of Japan's actions during the war, this movie portrays the nationalistic zeal that characterized the Japanese forces in contrast to the despair many of the rank and file soldiers felt. It is very effect, and I highly recommend it.

Anyway, good week, better weekend. Have a great one!

Good Day!

Our buddy Reece from the Bay Area Open is putting together another pretty sweet looking event! This time in the 3 for int crew's own backyard!  The 1750 point 6 game GT style tourney will take place at the LA convention center about 15 minutes from my house.  There is no golden ticket, but the prize support is substantial.  $2000 worth of prize support!  That doesn't mean a whole lot right now with each finecast model being in the expensive as fuck price range, ha ha! But it is still better than most prize support out there. And maybe it will be enough to wrap down further than 3rd place!

The Truth as it Applies to Me: Growing up.

For those of you who don't know me in the real life. I am married with 4 children and I drive a hellish commute to work daily. With that said it should be obvious that my free time is very limited and my ability to play games is even more limited. I try to play lots of games; Warhammer 40,000, Magic: The Gathering, World of Warcraft, League of Legends, WarMachine, various board games and other internet bullshit games I come across. I like to think I play these games to a degree of skill and with an ability to win, but this all takes time. Reading, planning, plotting, listening to podcasts, painting, tournaments, it's all a massive time sink and let me tell you all, time is something you never have when you have 2 babies and a teenager. Football practice, homework help, diapers, bottles, cleaning, cleaning, oh and did I mention cleaning?!?! Sooo, why the fuck am I saying this?

Well the demand of it all is pretty overwhelming. I am not a fan of bitching to bitch so I do not want or expect any sympathy. I knew what I was getting myself into when it was all happening, I just did not understand what it all meant at the time. I can attribute it to lifting lots and lots of weight. I know I can hold 80 lbs in my right hand, 80 lbs in my left hand, I can squat 300 lbs and legs press 800 lbs, but can I do all this at the same time? FUCK NO!!! Damn. This is where I fucked up! Fortunately, like with weights, its a simple solution. I need to  put stuff down and stop trying to do so much! I think that is what growing up is about. When I was younger (Not that I am super old now at 30) I notoriously burned the candle at both ends. Running a raiding EQ guild, managing a Sizzler, going to college and DMing a super awesome D&D campaign. The difference of now and then though is simple. No one depended on me for anything. The factor that has changed in my life is responsibility. I now have a full plate of adult responsibilities on top of trying to be a top(ish) level gamer and all the effort and responsibility that involves its just a lot to bear. Again, the easiest responsibility to alleviate is the gaming. So what am I getting at?

Increases of responsibility, unbearable stress from all angles and not enough time to do anything with life, the simplest solution is to give up gaming for a while. The truth is, that is what I was leaning towards, but in reality the easy road is not the one I ever take. I am inclined to challenge myself to accomplish great things, like be a great father and husband and a great gamer all at the same time. Growing up, in my opinion is learning how to cope with the challenges life throws at us and becoming a stronger person for doing it, and never letting a challenge get in our way. Overcoming obstacles are moments that I cherish and I am looking forward to trying to make it all work.

I also want to take this opportunity to thank my Wife for reminding me that I do have other things to consider in life and for helping me better handle the expectations set before me. I love you Sendi. I will be home soon.

Space Marine: the demo review

Good day!

I had a little time over the long weekend here in the USA to download and play a bit of these two games produced by THQ.  You can find the demo link here for PC or XBL. The PS3 demo must be downloaded from the PS store like everything else.

I downloaded it on PC and PS3 and I found the PS3 version to be much more the experience I was looking for. The mouse look and key movement on the PC is not something I have ever really liked for a shooter game.  (My laptop is more optimized for work than for gaming so that may have steered my decision) But let me tell you, once I started the demo on PS3 and got into some hard core Ork face smashing... Never have I felt so rapturous playing a video game.  This is what I wish every shooter was like.  I know people are saying it's just a 40k skinned gears of war, but I say What's wrong with that?  Gears of war is a great game. Throwing a 40k Skin on it just makes it appeal to my demographic!

The PS3 version really captures the brutality of smashing Orks in the face/chompy bits with a chainsword.  Later, I got the power axe during a particularly long Ork wave... I couldn't wipe the grin off my face for twenty minutes!

Weekend Nosh: September 2

Well, Summer is pretty much over. But weekends will continue to kick ass. Here is some stuff for this weekend, if you are looking for suggestions!

Food: Daichan - Billed as Japanese Soul Food, it definitely gets points for authenticity (they even serve Natto, ffs. If you don't know what is, here is a wikipedia link. ) There food is really quite good, and probably the best traditional Japanese food I have in the San Fernando Valley. They have a slight Hawaiian slant, but that's fine with me. Check them out over on Ventura Blvd. in Studio City.

Drink: Chartreuse - I have resisted going too "High end" with this bit in the past, as I think a good alcohol should be one you aren't afraid to drink because its so damn expensive. HOWEVER, having finally got my hands on a bottle of this renown liquour last week for my Birthday... I can't suggest denying yourself the unique experience. Quite possibly the best drinking experience I have ever had, I literally didn't want to swallow it, it was that good. Try it (be warned though, a bottle is over $50.), and be impressed by the dizzying array of herbal flavors you get and the intense reaction in your mouth, giving it an almost syrup like consistency. Very unique.

Movie: Zombieland - This movie was a definite sleeper movie for me, considering its low budget and middling cast (at the time; obviously Jesse Eisenberg and Emma Stone have had much success since). However, my girlfriend suggested we watch it on dvd and I really think it is an excellent movie. Very innovative and well written, all 4 of the principle characters have loads of personality and talent (I actually have always enjoyed Woody Harrelson; I think he's a bit under rated). I enjoyed the take on the zombie movie it has, and the cameo midway through the movie is awesome.

Anyway, I hope I have given you a few things to consider. I realize this will likely never end up a true weekly piece, but I hope people can check back intermittently and have enjoyed my suggestions so far.
If you do take me up on one of them, feel free to leave some feedback (good or bad) in the comments. Have an awesome weekend!

The Mentality of Losing

We all reach a point in game where winning is no longer an option. My recent tournament performances have shed some light on the other side of the game, Losing. How do we learn from our mistakes? How do we play with integrity when faced with certain defeat? How do we keep ourselves from tilting or worse? Ever dreaded is the rage quits and pre teen tantrums in a public scene, but occasionally that inner monster rears his head, and reminds that we are human and we are not infallible. The question is how do we make the best of a bad situation?
Learning from a superior opponent is the best thing we can take from a loss. At the Bay Area Open I was paired against Grimgob in round 2 and Yakface in round 3. These 2 gentlemen are some of the top rated players in the U.S. and they handed me my ass pretty easily. I was pretty nervous going into the games with them and I made some obvious mistakes, but they played exceptionally well and capitalized on every opportunity I gave them. Seeing their tactics and watching how they took advantage of my errors made me a slightly better player. It was also cool for me to meet some iFamous people! More on this after the break!

Hero Battles!

Good day!

Hero battles is an idea we have been kicking around for a while.  Basically you take an independant character, beef him up as much as you see fit, and then battle your friends! It's like the pokemon of warhammer! ha ha!

My only hero
Without further ado, here are the rules we came up with!

Warhammer 40k Hero Battles
The 41st millennium is an age of war and carnage. During this time, countless battles have been fought and the tide of these battles have been turned by incredible individuals. This is an opportunity to see the Universe's finest heroes battle and see who is the mightiest of all!

Hero Selection:
1.      Any single model may be selected as long as it is not noted with Unique (or the equivalent)
2.      Any number of upgrades may be taken as long as it is legal in the appropriate and most current codex.
3.      No single wargear maybe be taken multiple times, unless it was specifically intended that way.
4.      No model may have an armor value.

The Game will be played on 4X4 table if there are less than 8 players, a 4X5 for 12 or less and 4X6 for greater than 12. The game will use standard scenery and all scenery should be identified and discussed before the game starts.

Turn Sequence:
Each round will consist of each player taking a turn. Effects that last 1 game turn will last an entire round, effects that last 1 player turn are not altered. At the start of each round, player turn order is established randomly! The simplest method is by putting a number in a hat for each player, then drawing from the hat at the start of each round.

Special Rules:

All units deploy on the table on the first turn.  Deep strike/daemonic assault/infiltrate are not allowed for this mission.

You may shoot into any assault you are not involved in. Hits will be determined on a random model in the assault.

EX: If there are 2 models in the assault, roll a D6. On the result of 1, 2, or 3 model 1 is hit. On a 4, 5, or 6 model 2 is hit. Blasts and templates work as normal.

All models have the hit and run special rule

Victory Conditions:
While it is true the last man standing is the toughest; the Emperor, The Chaos Gods, or whoever the hell is important to you do not like cowards! Each kill will be worth 1 victory point(VPs).  The game continues until there is only one hero standing.
 - The person with the most VPs at the end of the game will be known as the Deadliest Man in the Universe (Which let's you re-roll 1 to wound roll in the next game)
 - The last man standing will be the Toughest Man in the Universe (Which let's you re-roll 1 save in the next game).
 - If the last man standing is also the person with most VPs he will be the Grand Champion of the Universe (Which let's you re-roll 1 to wound roll and 1 save in the next game) until this title is taken from him.
-  If the last models die simultaneously, the victor is determined by VPs.  If there is a VP tie at this point, the people tied roll off. Winner of that roll off is the Luckiest Man in the Universe. The Luckiest Man in the Universe can use his supreme powers of luck to reroll 1 dice roll in the next game.

And those are the rules!  We are gonna take this for a spin and post a report of it sometime next week. What killer combo can you think of?

Crazy list idea: Mordrakwing!

Good day!

I have been thinking a bit about the special characters in the GK codex and it has come to my attention that there is no love for Grand Master Mordrak! I might have a bit too much GK on the brain, but I came up with what I think is a pretty interesting list using him as the focus.

He loves this stick like a fat kid loves cake.
First off, his statline is decent enough. It is the same as a normal Grand master with one more wound and attack. That's a pretty good deal for 25 points more already!  He comes with all the standard GK wargear with a MC daemon hammer as his primary CC weapon. His special rules are where things get interesting, specifically First to the Fray. More on this after the jump.

The Drunken Master: Wtf is a Dark Eldar?

Good Day!

Let me start this off by saying I don't play Dark Eldar.  I play against them fairly often and fellow blog author Ubershizza plays them pretty well.  But I don't play Dark Eldar.  I'm a Craftworld man until the day I die.
Alaitoc fo life!

That being said, I do play Grey Knights.  I was having a discussion with a buddy of mine from the FLGS who plays Dark Eldar and he was lamenting GKs ability to tear holes through their paper barges. That got me to thinking about Dark Eldar and what they could do to mitigate this.

Weekend Nosh: August 12

Hello! I am glad we have made it to another Friday. I love Friday, it is the day filled with hope for a great weekend. Here are a few things I suggest to make your weekend better:

Food: Chozo Mama - This is a Peruvian restaurant, with locations in Burbank and in Pasadena. The food is interesting, like a blend of Mexican and Asian cuisine. Nice and spicy with lots of flavor, try their fried Plantains as well. Excellent all around, though a bit pricey. Good news is, the portions are large.

Drink: Buffalo Trace Bourbon - Clocking in at around $20 for a 750ml bottle, this is the perfect middling bottle of bourbon. Definitely on par with Maker's Mark, if you like that, and around the same price. Buffalo Trace gets bonus points for being 90 proof. It has a smoothness to it that is sometimes hard to find in bourbon, I prefer mine made into a Manhattan, or a Murricane (see this link if you don't know about the Murricane), a sentimental favorite named after my favorite actor.

Movie: Broken Flowers - While on the subject of Bill Murray, I suggest one of his dramatic roles in this oddball drama. Murray is fantastic as the aging player Don Johnston ("with a T") on a mission to find out if he has an illegitimate son. As he weeds his way through his past lovers, he finds them to each be more unhappy with their life then the last. The movie is melancholy, but also silly and is a great watch if for no other reason the Bill's incredible talent. If you like him in any capacity, give it a shot.

Have a great weekend and stay classy San Diego.

'Ard Boyz List and my thoughts on Orks at 2500

Let me start with a brief summary of what the hell I am talking about.

For those of you who don't know 'ard Boyz is the only GW sponsored event that can be sort of seen as a regional championship.

I use all these terms loosely, as the culminating event, "The Throne of Skulls" is not a super competitive event. The prizes for these events are very good though and they give you a very good idea of who is top dog in your area by the end of the second event.

Of course, being a competitive gamer, I am all in on the idea of busting heads and winning some booty as well.

More info after the break!

Planet Hulk Anime on Playstation Network - Hulk Smash Whale Tail!

Hello Friends,

Here's a quick review on a great work of Anime, Planet Hulk!

All I can say about this film was GOOD TIMES! Earth's Illuminati (Iron Man, Black Bolt, Reed Richards, and Doctor Strange) banished hulk to a world with minimal life and lots of vegetation. Unfortunately, Hulk woke up too soon in the spaceship and damaged the ship enroute causing it to enter a blackhole and finally Hulk found himself crash landing on the gladiator planet, Sakaar.

I highly recommend spending the 80+ minutes it took to suck in the constant fighting smashing and amazing animation contained in this work of art.

I was awed by the hulk having a personality and vocabulary as well as being oddly attracted to the indigenous alien with Oldstrong powers, Caiera.

Out of 5 stars I would easily give this movie a 4.95 with the only reason not getting a 5 in that I wanted more. MORE! Hulk want MORE! With WHALE TAIL ON TOP!!!!

The Drunken Master: League of Legends, my impression

Good Day!

So I fired up League of Legends on Blood lord Soldados recommendation for a little while this weekend.  I was under the impression that it was just a game that you ran in your browser but that is not the case. It was actually a fairly lengthy download and install. I let the updates simmer while I went out to Dinner and when I came back I was ready to rock!

I started the tutorial and about 5 minutes into it, the game crashed.  It suggested that I update my video drivers. So another download and install later I was ready to rock!

So I fired up League of Legends... lol... And I finally got to play a bit! I launched the tutorial again and went through a pretty basic run through. All the attacks are auto attacks when you right click on the enemies minions. You do have to right click on each one which could get hectic in a big melee, but the general they give you to start with is a ranged bow user so you don't get to know that quite yet.

The tutorial runs you through the basic actions in the game.  Attacking units, attacking structures, purchasing items, purchasing and upgrading your abilities, and using the newer abilities that you get.  It was pretty straight forward and reminiscent of Starcraft. (I was told this is based on some kind of Hero battle mod for warcraft but I never played that)

Cursing and my in game experience after the jump!

Weekend Nosh: August 5th

The summer marches on, and I have been regretfully very busy. I hope to be back to posting more regularly. Below are a couple of choice pieces for the weekend:

Food: The Red Lion Tavern - Located in Silver Lake, this place is relatively legit German Food and Beer. All in all a very unique experience. Be warned, the place fills up fast past 9PM or so, so if you want to eat, get here a bit earlier. But stay for the beer, its fucking awesome.
Also of note, less hipsters here then in most bars in Silver Lake.

Beer: Franziskaner Weissbier - Related to the Red Lion, one of the prime reasons to go there is their beer selection on tap, and nothing is finer the a Franziskaner on tap. Rich and almost sweet, if you like Heffweissbier's from other places (like BJ's Brewery) or stuff like Shock Top, you will love this. Also, try their Dunkelweiss for a change of pace. You can likely find both styles in higher end super markets or liquor purveyors.

Movie: Inception - Probably my favorite movie from last year, this film united an excellent cast (among the best I think I have ever seen in a movie) with a really great up and coming director who happened to make a bajillion fucking dollars with The Dark Knight. Even if you aren't into Sci-Fi (which I highly doubt considering the nature of this blog...) give it a shot on the basis of its great acting and innovative story. The visuals are fucking awesome too, so make sure to get it on Blu-Ray.

Anyway, have a fucking awesome weekend and I will back with more next week.

Ork Boyz: All the troops you will ever need.

Hey guys and gals, welcome back to Blood Lord Soldado’s look into Orks.
SnakeBites, Goffs, Bad Moonz , Evil Suns?
Gimme that flava!

Part 3 of my Codex: Orks walk through is going to specifically focus on the troops and section of the army. With a limited selection of troops it may seem like it will be a short piece, but that’s far from true. Ork Boyz are a complicated beast and I do my best to make it clear on the different abilities they can do with just a few minor equipment changes.

Speaking of this being a weekly segment, I was preparing last week for the Bay Area Open, so I apologize for that.

So without any further hesitation:

League of Legends

Good Afternoon Ladies and Gentlemen,

With the tournament scene around here cooling off, and my infinite children not allowing me to get anything done before 9pm I have found myself struggling to get a steady source of gaming in. That is until I found League of Legends.

The Drunken Master: The Bay Area Open and me

Good day!

This weekend Soldado and I took a little trip up to Antioch, CA to participate in the first ever Bay Area Open!  I took the 1850 Grey Knights list that I have been pimping around the site. (You can see it in action, here, and here) Soldado took his modified 4 wagon Ork list that he talks about here

The tourney was 7 rounds over two days with standard book missions.  No frills or crazy bloated KP missions to bone DE players.  The playing area was a large fairground aircraft hanger type of room. It left plenty of room for all the tables they had set up in there and plenty of room to move around while everyone was playing.

A side note on terrain: All the tables were set up pretty much the same. A big piece in the middle with two ruins on opposite corners.  Some area terrain and low walls/barrels were scattered around the table as well.  This left some people feeling that there wasn't enough to block line of site.  I didn't run into that problem once.  It was enough to get most of my stuff in cover, but not enough that I could hide behind it the whole game. If you need to hide your whole army behind terrain so that you don't get shot at turn one, then maybe you should've won the roll to go first? Or reserve your army? This is a war game where shit gets shot down. If you are scared your pretty boats are going to get shot out of the air, then you should keep them at home.

More on my matchups during the tournament and my overall feelings on my list after the jump!

Bay Area Open Results and My Over-Compensation

Hey Everyone,

Just got back from the Bay Area Open. What an event!!!! Lot's of great people and great games of Warhammer 40k.

I was very pleased over all with the event, the venue and the atmosphere. There was a lot of very stiff competition there as well. It was good times from everyone I talked to.

The Results for the even are here, with our own Dok taking 8th place.

I didn't do so well and I will give you my insight to this after the break.

The Weekly Beast: Biker Marines

Since we already have Space Marines on our Minds from Last Weeks article on Vulkan and his lot, I would like to segue into the other most viable build (imo) from the Vanilla Codex. Bikers. This list is far more tactical of a build then Vulkan marines were from last week, but it also is less varied, typically sticking to a pretty narrow range of units. However, this is part of their strength as they are very flexible and can be extremely deadly to an unprepared opponent. Let's delve deeper after the jump...

The Drunken Master: The Realm RTT Game 2 battle report Grey Knights vs. Orks

Good Day!

This weekend I took a little trip through Carmeggedon to hit up a semi-local 1850 point RTT in Brea, CA.  I've been to the Realm a few times before and have done well in the past.  The guys there are cool and fun to play against, which is always a bonus when you have to hang somewhere for 6+ hours!

Here's my list:
Venerable Dreadnought w/2xtwin linked autocannon, psybolt ammo
Purifiers x 5 w/psycannon x 2, halberd x 3
Razorback w/psybolt

Purifiers x 6 w/psycannon x 2, halberd x 4
Razorback w/psybolt

Purifiers x 6 w/incinerators x 2, halberd x 4
Razorback w/psybolt

Strike Squad w/Psycannon
Dreadnought w/2xtwin linked autocannon, psybolt ammo
Dreadknight w/personal teleporter, Heavy incinerator
Dreadknight w/personal teleporter, Heavy incinerator, Nemesis Greatsword

I'm still not sure how this is relevant..

I didn't have the chance to take pictures this time around so I'm gonna give a quick recap of the games and my overall feelings on how I played and any mistakes I may have made. More after the jump!

Orks Elites - A closer look!

Mega Nobz with Lascannons? The good old days...
Last week we started a review of the current Codex: Orks with a look the HQ's and what they can do for you. Admittedly it was just a glance and as various people from over the internet pointed out, it needed more. I am not a ashamed to admit my short comings on this, but looking it over I don't feel it was missing that much. This week I am taking an in depth look at the Elites section of the codex and I hope you all enjoy it after the break, a long with a quick Q&A about the HQ article.

Fallout: New Vegas Expansion: Honest Hearts - Quickie but worth a squirt.

During the course of my Fallout New Vegas addiction, I recall stories of the Burned Man, former Malpais Legate of the Legion who was disgraced at Hoover Dam by the NCR and then burned alive by Caesar. This expansion involves Joshua Graham, aka the Burned Man (though there is little reference to the Burned Man after the first opening scene).

In about a weekend, I finished the game (it was less than a 500mb expansion download). Still, it was well worth the $10 as it held my attention the entire time (12 or so hours over two days). The heavies in the game were Daniel and Joshua Graham. Daniel is a pacifist while Joshua wants to kill the opposing "Legion Wannabes", the White Leg clan, to free Zion.

The only noticeable new weapons in this expansion were the 12.7mm submachine gun and the survivalist rifle though I will now look for more weaponry on the net. Another was a fist weapon from the monster "She", a Yao Gao of epic proportions.

I think the voice of Joshua Graham is Ron Perlman which made for an entertaining experience and the reason I followed Joshua Graham to the bloody end.

The level cap is now 35 and I was able to train unarmed up to 85 to switch from long distance owning to upfront face smashing glory.

I got this expansion first as it was rated better by a minuscule amount than Dead Money but I will check that out in a week or so.

The Drunken Master: Get your drink on! Part 1

Good day!

Real men drink their beers out of glass footwear
I live in LA. And if there's one thing about LA you need to know, is that there are a shit ton of places to get a beer. 90% of those places will be serving bud light, corona, MGD, and sometimes even Stella Artois!

"Ooooo, that must be fancy!  It has like a foreign name and stuff!" -  unknowing guy who just wants to put something cold and wet in his mouth

That's sarcasm at it's finest right there...

Those beers are fine if you just want to get drunk. But drinking shitty beer to get drunk is a waste of time when you could just spend $20 on a bottle of vodka and be done with it!

But then there are the other 10% of places you can go to get a good beer. An Allegash white, an Aventinus, a Franziskaner Dunkelweis, or even a 1554 if you're really lucky!  In addition to being a native LAien, I'm also mostly German with a little Norwegian so I have a biological imperative to consume as many good beers as possible!!! (and sometimes to throw fire at things)

Check after the jump for a couple of my favorite places to grab a beer around town!
