500 point mini RTT tonight!!!

Tonight I will be battling over at my FLGS for 500 point mini-tournament domination! I think this time, the Eldar will be making a reappearance. After I bombed out with my risky gambit at the last one, I aim to return to the glory of winning!!

I'm not sure what I'm going to take, as the field tends to vary a lot with only 500 points to work with. They changed the rules so that you can no longer have any vehicles with a combined Armour value of 36. So, no necron vehicles (except night/doom scythes. Quantum shielding ftl!), no Stormravens, no land raiders, no battlewagons etc.

My thoughts on strategy and my potential list after the jump!

Coming soon: Malifaux!

I've decided to give one of the skirmish level games a shot, and Malifaux has always intrigued me so I took some time last night and looked into what faction and list I want to play.

For those that don't know, Malifaux is a skirmish level game set in a magical, steampunky world similar to that of arcanum (Woo, 90's video game reference) but just a little bit darker. There are demons, zombies, steampunk aberrations, little kids, and guys riding pigs. What I'm saying is, the world is really interesting and has a lot of variation!

From the main site, "Based in an alternate Earth, Malifaux uses gothic, steampunk, Victorian horror with a dose of the wild west to inject fun and depth into the magical lawlessness of a world rife with monsters, necropunks, man-machine hybrids, gunslingers, and power-hungry politicos. Actively using character-driven stories to define the world of Malifaux, seek your fortune in this fast-paced and brutal 32mm tabletop miniature skirmish game. Assemble your crew and stake your claim!"

So far these are a couple of my favorite models
Like I have always said, ain't nothin like a goblin guy riding a pig

Thought for the day

I've been super busy at work for the last while, but I had a thought that I wanted to share...

With Necrons in the meta and more people leaning towards Veil of darkness type lists, does that make the heavy psycannon playable? It's not super awesome against immortals (unless it rends), but it could wipe an entire unit of warriors. It seems like it would at least be somewhat effective against IG and DE as well. So is that enough of an increase in performance to merit taking it?

Perhaps I will try it out and see.

Thoughtful Koala is thoughtful...

Warhammer 40k 25th Anniversary Model - Disapointing

So GW is releasing a Warhammer 40k 25th Anniversary Model, and needless to say it's a Space Marine.

Link to the model...

Crimson Fist, Captian with Powerfist and Plasma Pistol?

I get that there is supposed to be nostalgia involved in this and some historical significance of this dude within the realm of 40k, but really? I have been playing for like 16 years and I didnt even play in the Rogue Trader days.

The dude in the link doesn't even really look like the guy on the cover. I feel like it's a hokey attempt at selling a shitty model that has no play value. Overall I am disappointed that it is not something I can see being the item that signifies the culmination of 25 years of awesomnenss.  Plasma Pistol and P- Fist? Really?

Purifiers vs tactical marines, an objective look (for some reason)

Over on dakka, there has been a debate (?) running for the better part of this month about Grey Knights being OP.  A common argument presented is that a tactical marine is not as good as a Purifier. One of the more ridiculous statements is that Tactical Terminators are not as good as GK termies/paladins. To this I say, Duh? Is this a surprise? The GK models cost more points and serve a different purpose.
He's just as surprised.

To make either paladins or purifiers viable in large groups, you have to take a very expensive, or a very sub-par HQ, respectively. I know it is possible to run either out of the elite slot, but everyone seems to be upset that a 10 man paladin squad, that's fully kitted will kill their tac squad.  These are not equal things.

If you compare purifiers to tac marines 1v1, the purifier will look (and be) better since it has "upgrades" that the marines would have to pay more for or can't get at all. Fortunately for the lowly tac marine this isn't a game of "My one tac marine vs your purifier".  If you compare them in equal point chunks, a 10 man purifier squad with all the extras comes in at 358. What do you get for this? Up to two scoring units (If another 150 points is paid), a decent anti light tank fire base, a light assault unit that can tie up/kill a light to medium assault unit, and a psychic power that is effective against hordes with low armour saves.
The C:SM Player gets two full tac squads with ~20 points of wiggle room. For that, you have 5 different heavy weapon options which are all reasonably costed, the option to take a flamer, melta, or plasma as your army needs dictate, up to four scoring units (without the need to pay any additional points), and chapter tactics.

The main advantage of the tac marine is that it is cheap and it has a variety of tools to deal with different situations. Grey knights for the most part have psycannons.  Psycannons are pretty good at a lot of things. But they are not reliable in the way that bringing the right gun for the right problem is.

Broadside Bash: Do I stay or do I go now?

For those that don't know, the Broadside Bash is a local comp style tourney held at the OrcCon/StrategiCon here in LA. They bill it as a more friendly tourney to the hobbiest side of the gaming community. It's supposed to be an opportunity to come show off your painting and modelling skills... As opposed to bringing your hardest list to beat everyone's face in.

The missions are kind of weird, which is just one of the things that are making me leery about attending.  The funny thing about those missions, is that when you use the major/minor/massacre scoring conditions, you basically have to table your opponent to get max points. Which doesn't seem very friendly at all. Also, there are a lot of weird objective rules which I am not a fan of. My theory has always been Kill first, secure objectives later.

Another strange thing they are doing is allowing some forgeworld models into the tourney. The list of allowed models is here. From reading up on the tourney, I guess this is something that has been allowed in the past. But I have no way to feasibly practice against these units or any real desire to learn what they do. It might be cool to see some of the Eldar models on the table and painted in full glory though.

I'm mostly concerned because I'm strapped for cash and dropping $65 bucks on a tournament with uncertain prize support makes me leery. I would like to roll and get a bunch of battle reports up for the blog as they are what makes reading about warhammer fun imo.  So, I dunno. I have until feb 13th to stop waffling and then a week to figure out a 2k list. Need more Stormravens!!!

6th Edition Orks - Nobs = Nerfed!

I am going over the 6th edition rules changes and I am finding that hammer unit of Codex: Orks is simply getting the nerfstick. What does that mean for Orks? Other builds are very viable still. Kan Wall takes a pretty big hit, as cover saves will be 5+ instead of 4+. Speed Freaks seems a lot better, as bike are getting some love, not the Nob Biker Death Star is still impacted the same way Battle Wagon Nobs are. Green tide, I think is a whole lot stronger, as you can join units together. MEGA GREEN TIDE!!!!!  The fact that weirdboys now have psychic defense along with the change powers may make them viable… I will have to math have to math hammer and practice a game to tell for sure.

More After the Break!

2v2 team Battle report!

The mission can be found here

Team Sasquatch

The raiders are standing in for venoms
Mike - Dark Eldar

Asdubrael Vect
4 Incubi w/Venom (replace splinter rifle with splinter cannon)
4 Kabalite Trueborn 3 w/shardcarbines. 1 w/blaster, w/Venom (replace splinter rifle with splinter cannon)
10 Kabalite Warriors w/blaster, w/dark lance

Ravager w/ 3 disintegrators

Lots of proxies here.
Logan - Necrons
Anrakyr on Barge (Piranha)
Pyrrhian Eternals w/Tesla Carbine x 10, Lord w/ Warscyhe, Scarabs, Res Orb

Tomb Blades x 5 w/Particle Beamer, Shield Vanes (destroyers)
Doomsday Ark (Hammerhead)

They went with the strategy of "kill a lot of our stuff until we cry"

We win the roll off to go first and place the objectives around the table. I think we messed up a bit here as we spread the objectives we had control of a bit too far. We also nominated the units that need to be destroyed for the secondary objective.  Team DP - Land speeder, Oblit squad A. Team Sas - Ravager with disintegrators, the immortal squad.

Hot and heavy action after the jump!

Battle report preview! BAO team tournament matchup

Soldado and I are going to be heading up to the BAO again this year and we were thinking of playing in the team tournament as well! So today we are going to play against a couple of our buddies and practice the first mission

  • Scenario 1: Tacticality
  • Pitched Battle Deployment.
  • Each team rolls a D6 for each player. The team with the higher combined number wins the roll to go first and choose deployment zones as per normal.
  • After deployment zones have been determined, each player places 1 objective. Each objective may not be placed within 18″ of another objective or within 6″ of a table edge.
  • Seize the Initiative as normal.
  • Reserves as normal.
  • Victory Condition 1: Objectives.
  • Victory Condition 2: Marked for death! Each team designates a unit from each enemy players force as marked for death. The team that destroys the most of these units wins this victory condition.
Team Dok/Soldado (aka team donkey punch) are going to be playing Deathwing/Chaos against team Logan/Mike (aka team Sasquatch) who will be playing Necrons/Dark Eldar.  So Two of the oldest school codexes against the newest and a fairly new one.  Who do you think will prevail??? Battle report of this epic mission will be up either tonight or tomorrow! (Depending on how many beers I drink while I'm playing!)

RE6 looks pretty bomb

The new trailer for RE6 came out on friday and it looks pretty excellent. The game play looks a little more gears of war then previous titles, but that can only improve the play quality imo.  RE has always been one of my favorite game series, but it has suffered from a clunky combat system since day 1. Not being able to move and shoot puts a serious hindrance on what kind of enemies you fight and I'm glad they seem to be getting away from that.

Off topic, but truer words were never spoken

For those of you that have known me for a while, I have been poor as fuck for most of my life.  Even now that I have a decent job and make a decent wage, I still live almost exactly like I did when I was younger and broke as hell. I was over on cracked and saw this article.  Every item on that list is absolutely true.

It's a messed up world we live in... Even when you escape the problems of your youth, they still follow you.  Bad habits like the ones in the article on cracked are hard as hell to break. Especially because most people don't even notice that they are bad habits. That's just how you live!

This doesn't have anything to do with games or fun times, and for that I apologize. But that article really made me think. There are more people out there that could use perspective on this sort of thing and if I can do my small part to drop some knowledge... Then at least I'll feel better about myself for a little while.  Maybe I can even change out of my NPC shirt and into my secondary background character shirt for a while!!!

Nah... prolly not

Space Marine DLC: "The Dreadnought" Release date and more

I know this is a bit of old news, but the dreadnought DLC for Space Marine is coming out next week!

From Gameinformer

"The pack is called 'The Dreadnought," adds a new multiplayer mode called Dreadnought Assault where teams capture central locations on a map. The winners spawn a player controlled Dreadnought armed with Assault Cannon / Auto Cannon, a Meltagun and a Power Fist / Power Claw.

The Dreadnought DLC also includes three new multiplayer maps Desolation, Dome Mechanicus and Chem Refinery, as well as new achievements and trophies. The content costs 800 Microsoft Points or $9.99.

The Dreadnought content is coming to Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and PC on January 25.

Additionally, all players get a new multiplayer Capture and Control Mode for free."

"Ouch" is the only caption that comes to mind
The chaos dread looks freakin awesome!! The assault marine with the TH means business!

Gamer Wear:

This shirt from achtung t-shirt made me lol. Sometimes you gotta kill that evil Orc warlock for his crimes against the halfling dominion and sometimes you just gotta party down with him!
Notice there are no females in this picture. Not even a diversity D&D shirt will lie to you that much.

It's not the highest quality print, but I dig the message.

Next up (and also in the red theme that I just made up) is the OG design from D&D.

You can find this one over at thinkgeek for just under $20. They have lots of sizes so you can prove your nerd cred no matter how Ogre (Large) or Halfling (Small) you may be.

A bonus gamer wear for the week is this guy.

For those of you with a crippling sense of non-self-importance...
You can pick up this shirt from over at megagear. For only $15, you too can be the least important character in the story!!!

Necron FAQ review

The new necron FAQ (or newcrons as people are calling them...) has arisen from the dust on the GW site here.  I have only played against the new cron army twice and we got pretty much all of the rulings spot on. The most recent was a tough game, as my homie was using the writhing worldscape/tremorstave combo. Unfortunately for the necrons, Deathwing doesn't give a damn about dangerous terrain!

My beating up on my friends aside, I'm happy to see this FAQ come along and clear up some misconceptions that people had about the book. New Scarabs can now only be placed within coherency of a scarab that existed at the beginning of the turn, They changed the way that scarab generation worked, and they nerfed a couple of the other abilities.
As Skrewpa would say, the best necron is an Orange necron!

Check after the jump to see my thoughts on some of the major changes from this FAQ!

New 40k FAQs!!! OMGOMG!!!

Some new FAQ updates came out today as well as the necron FAQ!  FAQ day is always pretty exciting as the last couple have changed the game quite a bit.  Check after the jump for a quick synopsis of all the FAQ changes. (except necrons, they'll get their own article) .
Will your army get better? Or will they be Tyranids???

3forint does CES 2012

I made my way to Las Vegas last week to try to take in all that there was to behold at the International Consumer Electronics Show 2012.

The idea of it all was overwhelming at first, 2700 exhibitors covering over 1.851 million net square feet in 5 exhibit halls and casino showrooms. Every company that had anything to do with tech or communication was there.

We walked the show for 4 days and we didn't really overlap anything aside from the entrance areas and let me say it was insanity. I did a lot of name badge observing, just to see who I would run into and it was amazing how many people were there from overseas. Chinese, Japanese, all sorts of other islands, Europe, South America... There was a strong global representation of people from all over the world.

More information, including pictures, after the break!

3 for int stickers!

Hey all, we got some 3 for int stickers made a while back and they've been burning a hole in my pocket!

If you catch me out in the wild, and would like one... Then hit me up! The more that see them the better!!!

Golden Road Brewing

The golden road brewery just had their grand opening up the street today and I stopped by with some homies to drink some beers and watch the packers get beat up!  The place was pretty packed so we just picked up a couple 6 packs and hit the road. They had a deal where you could get a burger and a tall can for $10. I hope that's something they keep up with! It's a pretty awesome deal and looked good as hell.

Take a look at what they have to offer

I dig their design on the case. It's sturdy and has a cool look to it.

Tall 16oz cans
They had a grip of guest taps and a bunch of their stuff ready to rock. I've only had the hefe and the festivus so far and I really dig the hefe... The rest will have to wait for next time I guess :)

Either way, I recommend giving it a try if you're in the neighborhood. It's a chill spot... the only thing you gotta worry about is the trains going by every 15 minutes. They've turned it into a drinking game though. Every time one rolls by, take a sip! Train cheers!

6th edition Eldar codex update = awesomesauce

Note: The info this article was based on has been debunked. To see the current state of Eldar affairs, check out this article. Thanks for reading!

A lot of beneficial changes are in this 6th edition codex update pdf that was included in the 6th edition leak. The changes to the Eldar codex and how it will play in the next edition if these are true are what stands out to me the most.

I have been playing Eldar since 2nd edition. I love me some Eldars. Let me tell you. But they are just not that feasible in a world full of missiles and excellent troops choices. Currently the Eldar troops choices are some of the weakest.  Dire avengers can be tolerable but they will not stand up to a similar costed squad of boyz, melta vets, or even a basic strike squad.  Guardians have always been a joke. People like to bandy about the triple flamer storm guardian setup, but I think that's just trying to make the best out of a crappy situation...

Sad Eldars are sad
But with the leak of these 6th edition rumours, I think Eldar might be back in it!

My thoughts on some of the changes after the jump

6th edition rulebook leak!

There is a doc flying around the internets since last night that very well might be the leaked 6th edition rules.

Some of the stuff on the list is blowing my mind. They are either listening in on me and my friends conversations or they finally realized what common sense is!

Highlights after the jump!

Doctor Who parodies

This is pretty awesome http://www.buzzfeed.com/gregs11/20-doctor-who-parodies-crossovers-4x67
I especially like 2, 8, 14, and 16. I would buy a t-shirt of #16 in a second.

1st world problem: Depression

A couple things happened over the weekend that really got me thinking about life and how sucky it is. As most people with a television (or anyone who was within 400 yards of me on sunday) know, the Steelers lost to the Broncos.  The apparently not God-damned Broncos according to that OT play.  But to hear me say it, you might infer otherwise!

But that's life. Sometimes your team wins, sometimes they get beat by a guy that wears magic underwear. Who am I to judge?  Another thing that happened over the weekend was that I lost a really close ("Really Close" as in not really close) match to my buddy John over at capture and control.  I don't know why losing that game affected me so much, but it really made me rethink some of my life decisions up to that point.  Am I the man? Can I steam roll everyone at the BAO?  Why can't I roll more than a god damn 2 to damage bjorn???

For some reason Bjorn is less intimidating this way
One more thing happened over the weekend that really put a harsh perspective on life...

BAO mission, forgeworld bash, and more!

Ugh... Work has been crazy busy and my brother has been in town so I haven't had much time to post.  My apologies internet folks! There have been some things in the warhammer community going on that I wanted to talk about, and since I had the foresight to have a blog I can talk about them with the whole world!!!

Or the whole world that reads my blog.

Which from my webstats is a significantly less part of the whole... But that whole is comprised of a significantly denser portion of awesome!

I'm not calling you fat... Just.. Tightly packed

Yeah, so 40k... Haha! I wanted to talk about my impression of the mission after having actually played it and then speak a bit about the Broadside Bash that is coming up and their decision to allow IA units.

More after the jump!
