Diablo 3 woes, continued...

This afternoon, I logged in to find that all my items and gold were missing... My fault for having a weak password? Maybe? It was listed as "strong" by the password verification system.

But, really Blizzard? You make us play online all the time and deal with the lag and the queues and the bullshit installer and then I have to deal with account hacking to steal my miserable 5k gold?

Here is their statement on the matter:

“We’d like to take a moment to address the recent reports that suggested that Battle.net and Diablo III may have been compromised. Historically, the release of a new game — such a World of Warcraft expansion — will result in an increase in reports of individual account compromises, and that’s exactly what we’re seeing now with Diablo III. We know how frustrating it can be to become the victim of account theft, and as always, we’re dedicated to doing everything we can to help our players keep their Battle.net accounts safe — and we appreciate everyone who’s doing their part to help protect their accounts as well.”

Suggested?  I'd like to take a moment and suggest that you go F yourselves. Historically, the release of a single player game with multi-player support doesn't require a constant connection to your pos battle net servers to play the single player portion.  This "game" has been nothing but an inconvenience since it launched.  I'm generally a fan of blizzards games and their lore. That's why I laid my money out without a second thought on release day. Apparently I should've put my remembering cap on and thought back to the WoW beta/release.  At least at the beginning of WoW there wasn't a blizzard built-in motivator to hack accounts and steal their shit. (I'm talking about you, cash4gold auction house!)

The worst thing about it all is the community on the forums.

"should have had an authenticator"
"haha, noob"
"get an anti-virus"

Really, so I have to pay a premium in addition to the cost of the game so that I can perhaps play?  Authenticators are the biggest scam out there.  I'm surprised they haven't started charging monthly for them like car insurance. The noob comments are just people who haven't been hacked yet and will be just as pissed as I am.

Oh, and I have an anti-virus. Thank you very much. Those are always fool-proof!

The thing I'm mostly pissed off about is that I'm home sick from work today and I wanted to get a little game time in. (As I haven't had much time with the move and unpacking, 5k gold? Pathetic!)  I'm sitting here sick as hell and wanted to cuddle up with my beautiful barbarian Brunhilda and I log in to see her naked. No one wants to see that. She's only beautiful when shes driving her enemies before her and hearing the lamentations of their women (men?). No one does that to Brunhilda!!!

  1. I have heard the same complaints from a few locals in my area. Sorry to hear about your account getting hacked. Besides all that BS, how is the game? I am looking forward to picking in up in a couple months after they work out the bugs.

    1. The barbarian is pretty fun. The wizard was kinda hard to play with the lag. The enemies tend to teleport around because of the lag and that makes it difficult to keep melee enemies at range. The AH is kinda interesting but every time I look at it, I start wondering why I'm looking at a list of overpriced gear instead of playing the game, haha.

Overall, I want to like it as it is Diablo. But the ancillary problems outside the game are making it difficult.

  2. I'm sorry to hear you have been hacked and the way you have posted makes me want to comment on a few things since I think you are making some misconceptions make your bad mood worse.

A strong password is only as strong as the latest generation of codebreakers and diablo 3 is such a strong brand with such a potential for moneymaking that it's making the big boys come out to play.
If your strong password is a word that's either spelled differently or with a numeral here and there, it doesn't take long to crack it since we as humans are predictable and puts the numeral where it would normally have been the corresponding letter.

The only true strong passwords are the ones made of completely random letters and number and then pasted into the password field everytime you log on.

I don't find autheticators a scam, and if you have a smartphone running on either iOS or Android, Blizzard has the program available as a free app. The authenticator that costs money is the physical one and I have it from trusted sources that Blizzard doesn't make a dime on those. Their real "income" on that device is the amount of time they don't have to spend on account restoration.

I hope Blizzard will be able to track down your belongings really fast so you can get to play what you enjoy and also get well :)

    1. Thanks for your in-depth reply! Trust me, I'm not trying to fool myself. If someone wants my password to something, they are going to be able to get it in a fairly short amount of time. The thing that bothers me is that Blizzard forced me to have a password and puts me in the crosshairs of these people that are trying to kill my fun. Not only by being the new hotness(which to be fair, they can't help), but by also giving the thieves an outlet to turn their stolen in-game money to actual money.

I actually found out about the phone authenticator app yesterday after writing this post. I haven't downloaded it yet as my account situation has still not been addressed, but I plan to before the next time I log on. Thanks for the heads up.

Thanks for your well wishes, I'm glad to hear that there are people out there that aren't blizzard apologists and definitely glad to hear that there are people out there who can approach these things from a logical standpoint!

  4. I got my WoW account hacked out of nowhere last year and attached an authenticator. I then forgot about it completely, and trashed the phone it had been on. Led to quite the headache last week trying to get my account back from the grips of the authenticator.
Regardless, they have added a few more options to make security more manageable, but is still a huge PITA. Grab the authenticator, sign up for SMS (to make verification easier) and wait for your gold to get restored. Also, I have some extra Barbarian gear I was going to give to my alt, but if you want it, you can have. Since you are sick, are you still roasting meats tomorrow?

    1. I am for sure roasting meats. I was only out for a day. We can talk about barbarian gears when you come by if you like
